McLaren has once again modified the central area of the single-seater: the first update concerns the bargeboards, the second the floor inlet. In both cases, this is a technical refinement aimed at optimizing the car’s aerodynamics.

McLaren: the Miami updates 

 

To understand the work of the team led by Andrea Stella, we must take a step back to the Miami Grand Prix, where the British squad introduced its first major upgrade package.

On that occasion, the engineers headed by Rob Marshall modified the vertical elements of the bargeboards by adopting more curved shapes, while the outer fence featured a sharper profile at its trailing edge.

The same applies to the floor inlet, an area where McLaren was heavily inspired by the solution introduced by Ferrari since the pre-season testing in Bahrain, horizontally splitting the channels via a partition to accelerate the airflow towards the underfloor.

For their home Grand Prix, the MCL40 features further modifications in this area of the car. On the bargeboard front, the team has reshaped the leading edge of the first vertical element, while the second profile now shows a more linear trend, with a triangular shape that drops towards the floor in a much straighter manner.

However, the most significant update focuses on the floor inlet. While retaining the horizontal partition, which now features a much bulkier shaping, the upper channels have been eliminated by completely removing the previously present vertical strakes.

With this modification, McLaren effectively evolves the Ferrari concept: the goal is to re-energize the airflow to prevent flow separation. A meticulous refinement, designed to increase the aerodynamic downforce generated by the floor and ensure greater stability under all running conditions.
